TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – When Taiwan's chief delegate Lin Hsin-i (林信義) joined the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders’ meeting Friday, the international media center introduced him as the representative of Taiwan while showing the country’s flag.
At the annual event, Taiwan is usually designated by the label “Chinese Taipei” due to pressure from China. As Lin entered the stage to shake hands with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, a presenter introduced him as the “Chinese Taipei” delegation chair, the Liberty Times reported.
However, the screen at the media center only showed the name “Taiwan” and its national flag. The caption introduced Taiwan as a “major economic partner, chip sector competitor” while mentioning its population of 23 million and its GDP of US$805 billion (NT$24.72 trillion).
A state-run TV station reportedly showed a similar text when broadcasting the APEC ceremony. There was no footage of Lin interacting with other leaders after entering the meeting hall, CNA reported.
The two-day leaders’ meeting was taking place in the city of Gyeongju, but US President Donald Trump had already returned home after his meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Busan.
