TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — MediaTek on Wednesday announced its Kompanio 540 chip for the next wave of Chromebooks, promising longer battery life and smoother multitasking.
The processor features an octa-core CPU with two Arm Cortex-A78 cores and a dual-core GPU, per CNA. It supports LPDDR5 memory and UFS 3.1 storage for faster data access and seamless multitasking.
MediaTek said the chip extends Chromebook battery life by 35% over its predecessor, enabling all-day use without performance loss. It added that the Kompanio 540’s fanless design ensures quiet operation, suited to education and mobile work settings.
“We are excited to see the MediaTek Kompanio 540 empowering more Chromebooks,” said John Maletis, vice president of Google ChromeOS. He said he hopes to give users the means to handle a full day of work and play with ease.
MediaTek said it aims to grow its ecosystem beyond smartphones by targeting rising demand for energy-efficient, portable computing devices.
