TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Former Legislator Cheng Li-wun (鄭麗文) will take over as KMT chair on Saturday, with outgoing Chair Eric Chu (朱立倫) stepping aside to give her full authority over party appointments.
Chu led a mass resignation of 211 party officials, including high-level cadres and local branch heads, per CNA. He said this is to ensure Cheng can organize her team freely.
Outgoing Secretary-General Justin Huang (黃健庭) and other officials completed detailed handovers to support the move.
The decision, announced at the Central Standing Committee meeting on Oct. 22, sets a precedent for the transition of a chair. Chu and Cheng met last week to discuss budgets and election strategies, ensuring a smooth handover.
“None of this existed four years ago,” Chu said, noting the resignations are designed to give Cheng maximum space without creating difficulties. He stressed that party work depends on internal cohesion.
