TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) unveiled four strategies in its annual IEKTopics special issue to boost quantum technology and strengthen Taiwan’s position in the global tech race, CNA reported Tuesday.
The issue was launched at a seminar hosted by Academia Sinica under the auspices of the Ministry of Economic Affairs. The event gathered local and international experts to discuss trends and Taiwan’s advantages in quantum technology.
ITRI President Chang Pei-jen (張培仁) said quantum science marks its centennial this year, and Taiwan cannot sit out the global race for tech dominance. Chang said ITRI is developing key hardware for quantum computers and integrating Taiwan’s strengths in semiconductors, cybersecurity, and healthcare.
ITRI Vice President Lin Chao-hsien (林昭憲) said quantum technology is becoming the next major wave after AI, with about 30 countries including it in national innovation plans. He said quantum computing will work with supercomputers and AI to meet various needs.
Taiwan’s semiconductor and information and communications technology sectors, Lin added, give it a strong base to join this global push. He outlined four strategies: focus on core technologies and AI-linked applications; participate in global alliances; enhance governance and talent development; and build testing and startup platforms.
He noted the Cabinet’s “AI Ten Major Projects” and the National Science Council’s next-phase quantum initiative will help create a national hub for quantum research and development.
IEKTopics is an annual special issue from ITRI’s Industry, Science and Technology International Strategy Center that analyzes major industrial and technological issues and their future impact on Taiwan.
