TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The National Chung Shan Institute of Science and Technology will hold live-fire drone exercises off Jiupeng in early November to assess the tactical use of domestically produced drones in an airstrike role.
NCSIST will deploy the Albatross II UAV armed with 2.75-inch rockets and the Jingfeng I loitering munition on separate sorties to attack maritime targets, per Liberty Times. The exercise aims to verify the combat effectiveness of a true sensor-to-shooter unmanned system.
According to a government notice, NCSIST scheduled live-fire tests for Nov. 4–7, to run from day into night. All tests will take place in waters and airspace stretching from off Jiupeng to the area between Green Island and Orchid Island.
The Albatross II has an endurance of up to 16 hours and a maximum range of 2,000 kilometers, enabling reconnaissance across Taiwan’s surrounding waters and airspace. NCSIST has developed anti-submarine warfare and strike-recon variants of the Albatross; air-launching a Jingfeng attack drone from the UAV would greatly extend its strike reach.
