TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Chunghwa Post will roll out a fleet of electric three-wheel delivery scooters in Greater Taipei starting Wednesday, as part of its effort to promote green logistics and sustainable transportation.
The scooters, which can be powered by charging or battery swapping, will initially be deployed for parcel deliveries across all districts of Taipei and in New Taipei's Banqiao and Sanchong Districts. Chunghwa Post Chair Wang Kuo-tsai (王國材) said at a press conference on Tuesday that if the pilot program proves successful, it will be expanded to rural areas, per CNA.
The move follows the company’s earlier launch of two-wheel electric scooters for deliveries. As part of its goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, the postal service has introduced 3,630 electric scooters and expects to fully transition to electric vehicles by 2040.
The three-wheel models offer greater safety and higher cargo capacity than two-wheel models, with each vehicle able to carry up to 80 parcels. Each electric three-wheeler is estimated to reduce carbon emissions by about 471 kilograms annually compared to gasoline-powered models.
Due to their larger cargo loads, the three-wheel models have a range of about 60 km per charge, while the company’s existing two-wheel electric scooters can travel up to 75 km, the company added.
To speed its green transition, the company plans to procure 3,940 additional two-wheel electric scooters by the end of this year, a move that will bring its delivery fleet to 50% electric. It has also implemented greenhouse gas inventory and energy management systems at 36 of its branches.
Chunghwa Post has established a logistics park in Taoyuan’s Guishan District, which serves as the company’s primary mail processing center in northern Taiwan. The eight-story facility has a total floor area of nearly 70,000 ping (about 231,406 square meters) and is equipped with 5G, automated warehousing, and AI technologies.
