TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Keelung, Taipei, and New Taipei will not suspend work and classes on Tuesday, while Yilan as well as Taoyuan’s Fuxing District will both suspend them.
The Central Weather Administration said the northeast monsoon, combined with the outer circulation of Tropical Storm Fengshen, is affecting northern Taiwan. Localized heavy to extremely heavy rainfall has already occurred north of Hsinchu and in Yilan, with intense rain expected to continue at least until Wednesday, according to UDN.
Under Taiwan’s regulations, work or school can be suspended when forecast or observed rainfall reaches 200 millimeters in mountainous areas and 350 mm in plains. In Tainan, Pingtung, Hualien, and Yilan, the threshold is 350 mm for all areas, regardless of elevation.
From Sunday to Monday morning, accumulated rainfall exceeded 200 mm in New Taipei, Taipei, Taoyuan, and Yilan. Shiding District in New Taipei recorded the highest total at 338.5 mm, followed by Nangang District in Taipei with 329 mm, Luzhu District in Taoyuan with 232.5 mm, and Toucheng in Yilan with 200.5 mm.
According to the latest forecast from the Central Weather Administration, Taipei is expected to receive 150–250 mm of rainfall on the plains over the next 24 hours, which does not meet the criteria for suspending work or school, Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) said.
