TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A driving school in New Taipei has launched courses in Vietnamese to help Taiwan’s growing Vietnamese community earn driving licenses, PTS reported on Oct. 18.
PTS reported more than 200,000 Vietnamese now live and work in Taiwan, and many prefer taking lessons in their native language. The school trains about 400–500 learners a year, all with Vietnamese-speaking instructors.
One of them, Yen Anh, came to Taiwan as a student 11 years ago and later became the country’s first Vietnamese female driving instructor. She said she saw the need for Vietnamese-language training after working as a translator at the school.
Most students are foreign workers who find the one-month course affordable. The school offers both theory and road tests in Vietnamese, making it easier for students to qualify for a driving license.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Transportation and Communications recorded 2,112 traffic accidents involving foreigners last year, with Vietnamese accounting for most cases. Officials say better driving lessons can help prevent such accidents, per PTS.
Taiwan and Vietnam have a reciprocal driver’s license recognition policy, which allows for license recognition after applying for conversion.
