TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan on Saturday thanked the European Parliament for taking a stance against Chinese aggression at last week’s 42nd EU–China Inter-Parliamentary Meeting in Brussels.
The EU delegation reaffirmed the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and rejected unilateral change to the status quo, according to the European Parliament. The delegation also said it would “continue to pursue close cooperation with Taiwan within the framework of its One China policy.”
It also condemned “any distortion or misrepresentation of facts, particularly with regard to UN Resolution 2758.”
These statements highlight the European Parliament’s support for peace in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific and reflect the EU’s concern over China’s unilateral distortion of international law and UN resolutions, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Since the start of the 10th European Parliament, it has adopted several pro-Taiwan resolutions, including one condemning China’s misinterpretation of UN Resolution 2758 and its ongoing military provocations against Taiwan, MOFA said. The EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy and Common Security and Defence Policy also include provisions supporting Taiwan.
MOFA said Taiwan would continue to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the European Parliament, bolster democratic resilience, and promote a partnership based on shared values.
