TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Army has allocated NT$8,106,564,000 (US$264.69 million) to purchase 86,114 domestically developed T112 rifles.
The Army plans to procure 14,248 rifles this year and 24,534 next year, CNA reported. The Army’s procurement plan will last from 2025 to 2029, but does not specify how many rifles it plans to purchase in the remaining years.
The Armaments Bureau developed the T112 as the next-generation service rifle and is designing eight other related items, including the TS112 close-quarters sight, the TS112 reflex/red-dot sight, and the TS112 rifle laser designator.
The new rifle, already in mass production, offers better accuracy and basic illumination and laser-designation functions. It is expected to improve unit and individual-level combat effectiveness. The Military Police Command, Reserve Command, and other units will re-equip with the T112.
The Army has also set aside NT$892.8 million for 5.56 mm steel-core rifle rounds. The ammunition is confirmed as being able to penetrate the Chinese military’s standard-issue body armor and is expected to enter mass production starting next year.
