TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) said Tuesday that Taiwan’s textile industry will not stand alone against China’s overcapacity and US tariffs.
Speaking at the opening of the Taipei Innovative Textile Application Show (TITAS), Hsiao praised the sector as one of Taiwan’s oldest success stories, per CNA. From its roots in garment-making to today’s advanced fabrics, she said, “Made in Taiwan” remains a mark of quality.
Hsiao said Chinese production gluts and dumping, coupled with US trade barriers, have put heavy pressure on Taiwanese textile exporters. She said the government is in talks with Washington to seek fairer and more competitive trade terms for Taiwan.
To remain competitive, she said, the industry must keep adapting to technological advances and modern consumer needs. She added that this year’s TITAS themes — sustainability, functional applications, and smart manufacturing — reflect the sector’s evolution toward eco-friendliness.
Hsiao said Taiwan’s textile industry is no longer “traditional” but a model of innovation and cross-sector integration. After the ceremony, she visited booths from major exhibitors including Eclat Textile and encouraged the public to wear Taiwanese clothes with pride.
