TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — For many beginners, opening a beehive and harvesting honey can be an intimidating experience, but a new virtual reality program developed by the Miaoli District Agricultural Research and Extension Station aims to change that.
The program uses a mixed-reality headset to teach participants how to open hives, locate the queen bee, and collect honey, all without the risk of painful stings. Through interactive simulation, users can learn essential beekeeping skills safely and effectively, per CNA.
According to the extension station, many novice beekeepers struggle with handling bees and using protective gear, which often results in injuries. The digital training program simulates real-world apiary management and honey collection, allowing users to practice with lifelike tools, remove honeycombs, scrape off wax caps, and extract honey virtually.

The immersive simulation can be conducted almost anywhere and at any time, offering flexibility for training and education. The program provides step-by-step guidance and interactive prompts to help learners master the fundamentals of honey harvesting in a stress-free environment.
Officials said the virtual beekeeping tool will be introduced to beekeepers, educational institutions, and ecological farms to promote apiculture and agricultural education. It also serves as an engaging parent-child activity designed to inspire the next generation of beekeepers.
