TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Chang Gung Medical Technology held a beam-raising ceremony Wednesday for its new factory in an industrial park in Chiayi’s Lucao Township, which is scheduled to begin operations by the second half of next year.
The company invested NT$3.5 billion (US$108.5 million) to build the facility, a five-story building with a total floor area of 9,585 ping (approximately 31,700 square meters). The factory aims to expand the company's medical device production and establish a cold-chain facility, which is set to provide food services for Chiayi Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, per CNA.
Company Chair Yang Li-chu (楊麗珠) said the facility broke ground in June 2024 and faced challenges such as damage from typhoons and labor shortages, but construction resumed with the support of the county government. She noted the factory will feature automated production lines and energy-saving equipment.
Yang highlighted the factory, which is expected to provide up to 600 jobs, will become the company’s hub for medical equipment and frozen food production. She hopes it will contribute to strengthening Taiwan’s healthcare sector.
Magistrate Weng Chang-liang (翁章梁) attended the ceremony and noted that more than 50 companies have set up operations in the industrial park. He added the county government will continue to develop the park’s infrastructure and promote collaboration between businesses and schools to cultivate local talent.
Weng added the industrial park will work with the Chiayi Science Park, the Asia UAV AI Innovation Application R&D Center, and the aerospace R&D base in Minxiong Township to support the development of the county’s drone and aerospace sectors.
Company General Manager Chen Shih-che (陳士哲) said the company has developed a hospital bed with a built-in touchscreen that allows medical staff to upload patients’ vital signs at any time. It has also designed an electric medical cart for nurses, equipped with a motor and assist system to make it easier to push.
