TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Health and Welfare on Tuesday said donations for disaster relief in Hualien County have surpassed NT$1 billion (US$32.7 million).
To assist more than 1,800 households affected by flooding in Guangfu Township, the Taiwan Foundation for Disaster Relief is running a campaign from Sept. 25 to Oct. 24, per CNA. All funds will go toward disaster relief, emergency medical aid, and reconstruction efforts for victims.
As of 11:59 p.m. Monday, the foundation reported receiving 285,446 donations totaling NT$1.073 billion, more than double the original goal of NT$500 million. Donations exceeding NT$1 million totaled 88.
The foundation has divided the funds into statutory relief, livelihood support, and special aid. By Tuesday, NT$473.65 million had been transferred to the health and welfare ministry to support the Cabinet’s one-stop disaster relief service center.
Since the fundraiser began, donations have continued to pour in daily, setting a new record for the foundation. The foundation said that post-disaster recovery is a long-term effort, so fundraising will continue until the original deadline of Oct. 24.
Donations can be made to the Taiwan Foundation for Disaster Relief (財團法人賑災基金會) at Land Bank of Taiwan, Changchun Branch (土地銀行長春分行).
Contributions can also be made through LinePay by pressing the “donation” button and selecting the “Mataian River Barrier Lake Disaster Fundraising Program” (馬太鞍溪堰塞湖災害專案). Donations are likewise accepted at convenience stores.
