TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Tuesday paid tribute to “excavator hero” Lin Hung-sen (林鴻森), who died after volunteering in flood relief work in Hualien.
Lin, who owned an excavator company, rushed from Taoyuan to Hualien with two skid-steer loaders to assist rescue efforts after Mataian Creek’s landslide lake overflowed, flooding Guangfu Township, per CNA. He was injured during the operation and later died of sepsis on Monday, the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
In a Facebook post, Lai praised Lin’s courage and compassion, saying his actions reflected the unity and generosity that define Taiwan. Lin’s dedication, he added, moved the entire nation and will long be remembered.
The president urged volunteers and rescue workers in Hualien to prioritize safety and seek immediate medical care for even minor wounds.
“Mr. Lin gave his life to show that Taiwan’s greatest beauty lies in its people,” Lai said. “Once again, I offer my deepest respect and gratitude to him and his family.”
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health and Welfare said donations for victims of the Hualien floods have exceeded NT$1 billion (US$32 million). The ministry thanked the public, saying the support reflects Taiwan’s solidarity in the face of natural disasters.
