TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Sports Minister Lee Yang (李洋) answered his first legislative interpellation at the Legislative Yuan on Tuesday over the Ministry of Sports’ decision-making practices, per CNA.
The Ministry of Sports officially launched on Sept. 9, with two-time Olympic badminton gold medalist Lee assuming office as its first minister.
KMT Legislator Lin Chien-chi (林倩綺) raised concerns that the ministry’s personnel and policy decisions appeared dominated by a single group. She said the current setup risks suppressing diverse opinions and narrowing opportunities for local coaches and smaller institutions.
Lee responded that he was aware of the issue and would listen to all sides to ensure transparency. Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰), who stood beside Lee, promised that decisions, funding, and personnel arrangements would remain fair.
Lin also criticized the NT$8.7 billion budget for the “Top 10 Taiwan Brand Sports Events” plan, arguing it violated the Budget Act by lacking a clear agenda. Lee said the project aims to bring more international events to Taiwan and raise the country’s visibility on the global stage.
She further called on Lee to “turn crisis into opportunity” by improving sports infrastructure in underdeveloped eastern Taiwan. Lee said the ministry has begun assessing the needs of Hualien and Taitung.
Lee pledged to provide better training venues and integrate sports into reconstruction efforts.
