TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan is expected to resume discussions with the US about purchasing more than 12 MH-60R Seahawk anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopters, according to a senior government official.
The package would also include airborne sonar systems, advanced avionics, MK54 or MK50 torpedoes, anti-ship Hellfire missiles, laser-guided rockets, and machine guns, among other equipment, the Liberty Times reported. New Seahawks would significantly boost Taiwan’s ASW capabilities.
To advance the sale, the Navy has established a dedicated team to handle procurement quantity, total cost, scheduling, and performance requirements, the official said.
The military planned to purchase new ASW rotorcraft as early as 2014 and selected the Seahawks, but they were not included in the national defense budget due to other procurement priorities.
Taiwan originally had 21 S-70C ASW helicopters, but four were lost in major aviation accidents, leaving 17 in service.
The MH-60R Seahawk is one of the US Navy’s ASW helicopters. South Korea received its first Seahawk last year, and New Zealand announced in August that it would purchase five Seahawks.
