TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Former DPP Secretary-General Lin Yu-chang (林右昌) is considered a possible candidate for next year's Taipei mayoral race.
The DPP will hold an election strategy meeting on Tuesday to review possible candidates for all of Taiwan’s 22 counties and municipalities. Party insiders say that Lin, who was previously the Keelung mayor, is likely to be put forward for either the Taipei or New Taipei mayoral races, reported UDN.
Lin resigned from his position as secretary-general after the failure of the Great Recall campaign in late July. However, he is a familiar face among DPP leaders with a strong network of support in northern Taiwan.
The DPP held a preliminary election strategy meeting on Oct. 1, with legislators Wu Szu-yao (吳思瑤) and Wang Shih-chien (王世堅) floated as possible choices for the Taipei race. However, some are reportedly reluctant to put forward sitting legislators who may be better positioned to defend their seats in the Legislative Yuan.
Following the first strategy meeting, former legislative candidate Enoch Wu (吳怡農) said that he is willing to run for Taipei mayor. However, Wu signaled that he would let the DPP nomination committee determine the best candidate for the race.
For the New Taipei mayoral race, Legislator Su Chiao-hui (蘇巧慧) is seen by many as the presumptive nominee, while Lin is also seen as a possible candidate for the party, per UDN. The DPP nominee will face TPP Chair Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌), who will have favorable odds if he can secure the KMT’s endorsement.
The DPP anticipates that all nominations and primaries will be completed by January for the municipal elections set to be held in late 2026.
