TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Cleanup of homes after the barrier lake overflow in Guangfu Township should be completed by noon Friday, while roads are expected to return to normal before Monday’s Mid-Autumn Festival, the government said Friday.
The overflow triggered by Typhoon Ragasa caused 18 deaths, with six people still unaccounted for in the Hualien County township. Tens of thousands of volunteers and military personnel have converged on Guangfu in recent weeks to help with the cleanup.
Minister without Portfolio Chi Lien-cheng (季連成) on Friday ordered a speedup of the campaign to help the township recover, per CNA. He said all homes should be cleaned by noon Friday, with the operation shifting to roads and trash removal Friday afternoon.
Authorities are also monitoring the Mataian Creek barrier lake around the clock for any signs of renewed overflow. While the area has seen several rain-free days, experts warn a change in the weather could cause new problems, per UDN.
Officials said the lake contains 5.9 million cubic meters of water and 2.5 tons of mud. Experts said they need to prevent a sudden, simultaneous release of water and prepare evacuation plans if necessary.
