TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Former President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) called for public participation to defend democracy in her “Thinking Taiwan” relaunch announcement on Friday, CNA reported.
Tsai said on social media that Taiwan’s democratic system was hard-earned. She added that protecting democracy is a shared responsibility not just the task of political leaders.
The nation’s former president also pointed out that inclusivity is important in public debate. Listening to different opinions, Tsai noted, improves decision-making.
Thinking Taiwan was first launched in 2012 by Tsai's Thinking Taiwan Foundation. The platform was created to promote civic dialogue and policy debate.
The website first attracted civic groups interested in discussing public issues. It gradually lost visibility during Tsai’s presidency as her administration took center stage in policymaking.
Tsai said the relaunch introduces updated content and new features to broaden engagement. She explained the platform will form an editorial committee of experts and scholars to gather public opinion and ideas on Taiwan’s future.
A Thinking Taiwan Foundation statement said “thinking is the most effective way to avoid polarization." It hoped the platform would serve as a bridge between the government and its people, CNA reported.
