TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A 73-year-old woman involved in a viral Taipei Metro priority seat dispute was arrested Wednesday on a theft warrant.
A video circulating online shows the MRT incident on a Red Line train, per CNA. Despite other seats being available, the woman, surnamed Tseng (曾), insisted on a priority seat and argued with a young man who refused to give it up.
She struck his legs with her shopping bag, prompting him to kick her in retaliation. On Tuesday, a smartphone video of the incident spread online.
Neither party filed a police report. Taipei Metro said the incident occurred around 4 p.m. on Monday on a train from Xinyi Anhe Station going to Tamsui.
Taipei Metro Police said that even though no complaint was filed, they will review the video and summon both parties. The pair will be investigated for suspected breaches of the Social Order Maintenance Act.
On Wednesday, a photo posted online showed Tseng being taken away by Taipei police at a convenience store after resisting arrest. The post read, “She seemed to be causing a scene at a FamilyMart and was just taken away by the police.”
Taipei Police Department's Datong Precinct confirmed that officers apprehended Tseng at a convenience store on Yanping North Road at 9:30 a.m. Shilin District Prosecutor’s Office issued a theft warrant for her on Tuesday.
