TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taipei City Government has completed a traffic safety improvement project to remove the Gongguan Roundabout at the intersection of Roosevelt Road and Keelung Road, which officially opened to traffic on Monday, per CNA.
However, normal commuting volume at the intersection did not occur until Tuesday, as the previous day was part of a long holiday associated with Teachers’ Day. On the first regular workday, cars, two-wheeled vehicles, and even those riding the bus expressed confusion as the roundabout was converted into a cross intersection with new signs and road markings.
Huang Hui-ru (黃惠如), deputy director of the Traffic Engineering Office under the Taipei City Department of Transportation, urged commuters to pay attention to new signs denoting adjustments to traffic patterns for cars, motorcycles, and buses.
She said the new design includes dedicated left-turn lanes in each direction. However, riders on two-wheeled vehicles will still need to make a two-stage left turn at the Fuhe Bridge underpass.

According to the Department of Transportation, the new design will have the greatest impact on two-wheeled vehicles, which may need time to adjust to the changes. Bus stops will also undergo major adjustments.
Buses entering Roosevelt Road from Keelung Road and Fuhe Bridge will no longer stop on the roadside. Instead, they will operate and stop in a dedicated bus lane on Roosevelt Road.
The Taipei City Public Works Bureau said pedestrians should proceed with caution when passing through work areas. Other minor construction projects, including pedestrian refuge islands, are expected to be completed by early October.
