TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Typhoon Ragasa caused damage to farming of NT$333.24 million (US$10.94 million), the Ministry of Agriculture said Saturday.
Hualien County suffered most during the typhoon, with the overflow of a barrier lake causing destruction and loss of life in Guangfu Township. According to government figures released Saturday, the storm caused 16 deaths, with six people still unaccounted for and at least 82 injured.
The ministry said Hualien accounted for NT$330.49 million of the damage to farming, with NT$2.09 million or 1% reported by Pingtung County, per CNA. Crops sustained NT$17.17 million worth of damage, including NT$7.4 million recorded for rice fields.
The ministry said the livestock sector suffered NT$1.24 million in losses, with 4,800 chickens and 11 heads of cattle reported dead. At least NT$314 million in losses were the result of damage to infrastructure, including buildings, greenhouses, fields, and fishing boats.
The data had been collected up to Saturday noon and would be regularly updated, the ministry said.
