TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Food and Drug Administration will pay up to NT$1 million (US$32,800) to individuals uncovering fraud with health foods and supplements, reports said Saturday.
The foods have to be certified by the government, carrying the symbol of a “Little Green Man” as a mandatory certification mark. The symbol shows that the product has been submitted to scientific verification of its health benefits.
Last year, the authorities uncovered two violations, with businesses exaggerating the health benefits of their products, per CNA. In both examples, whistleblowers brought the cases to the attention of the administration.
In order to encourage the discovery of more cases, the government published a proposal on Sept. 18 to raise the maximum reward for whistleblowers to NT$1 million. The administration hopes the change will boost its food safety campaign.
The previous reward level was set at 5% of the fine the producer had to pay for breaking the law. Under the new regulations, a member of the public will receive at least 20% of the fine, while a current or former employee of the business responsible for the fraud will receive an equivalent of at least 50% of the fine.
The administration said people with information about violations could contact the local government’s health department or call the 1919 national food safety hotline.
