TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Over 70,000 donations have pushed Hualien’s disaster relief fund past NT$200 million (US$6.56 million) in just two days, the Ministry of Health and Welfare said Friday.
Mataian River Bridge collapsed on Tuesday following heavy rain from Typhoon Ragasa. In response, the ministry launched a disaster relief fund for Mataian Creek victims on Thursday, per CNA.
Donations are being accepted through bank transfers and Line Pay. The ministry said no handling fees will be charged and money will go toward reconstruction and emergency medical care.
Convenience stores will also accept donations, including 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Hi-Life, and OKmart. For overseas donors, contributions can be wired to the Taiwan Foundation for Disaster Relief at Land Bank of Taiwan, Changchun Branch.
Meanwhile, Taichung-based developer Fong-Yi donated 50 wheelbarrows and 10 high-pressure washers through its partners. The company said it hopes the gear will speed recovery and restore safe living conditions.
Recovery efforts in Guangfu Township continue as residents clear homes and public spaces of thick layers of mud.
