TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) said Thursday at the launch of the National Ocean Policy White Paper that it was imperative to leverage Taiwan's strengths as a maritime nation to give impetus to technology and industrial development.
Hsiao recalled President Lai Ching-te’s (賴清德) words when she pointed out that Taiwan is an island nation and “we are children of the sea.” In his inaugural speech in May 2024, Lai pledged to strengthen “as a maritime nation, deepen connections with the ocean, and invest more in marine science and technology research,” per the Presidential Office.
Hsiao said that Taiwan must build strength to face future challenges, noting that the Legislative Yuan will soon review a special budget for national resilience that includes advice from the Ocean Affairs Council. She hoped the ruling and opposition parties would work together to support the plan to defend Taiwan’s long-term security and development.
The National Ocean Policy White Paper, according to Hsiao, symbolizes the government’s commitment to its people. She called on Taiwanese to put principles into action so the nation can demonstrate responsible global ocean governance while continuing to protect the seas.
