TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Wednesday urged DPP members to uphold their honesty and diligence as the party prepares to mark its 39th anniversary.
Speaking at a Central Standing Committee meeting, Lai recalled that many democracy activists risked arrest or death in their fight to create the DPP, per CNA. Their courage, he said, opened the door to democracy and wrote a new chapter for Taiwan.
Lai said over the past 39 years, the DPP has carried the sacrifices of generations who fought for freedom. He said the party also bears the heavy expectations of the Taiwanese to deliver good governance.
The president stressed that all officials, from senior leaders to new members, must recognize the weight of carrying the DPP banner. Their mission is to ensure everyone in a free Taiwan can live securely and pursue their dreams.
Lai called on party members and supporters to urge the DPP forward. He vowed that the party would improve where needed and stay true to its founding spirit.
