TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The death toll following the overflow of a barrier lake in Hualien County rose to 17, while the number of people unaccounted for was cut to 17, the government said Wednesday.
The Mataian barrier lake overflowed Tuesday afternoon following extensive rainfall during Typhoon Ragasa. Floodwaters and mudslides surged into the township of Guangfu up to a height of one story, causing widespread damage to homes, businesses, and vehicles.
The Central Emergency Operation Center said Wednesday afternoon that the death toll had risen to 17 from 14, the Liberty Times reported. The number of missing fell to 17, while 32 were reported injured.
Earlier official tallies had put the number of missing above 100. The operation center explained the discrepancy by pointing out the local fire services had counted each phone call about a missing person as a separate case.
The number of evacuees reached 8,395, with 1,027 being distributed over 17 shelters. The authorities warned against the risk of more overflows, even though water levels in the lake had fallen by 75% following Tuesday’s disaster, per CNA. Estimates put the amount of water that had flowed out of the lake at 60 million cubic meters, with 23 million cubic meters still left.
