TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The National Palace Museum has asked the Czech Republic to increase security at the exhibition of its art treasures following a threatening e-mail, reports said Wednesday.
The Mainland Affairs Council said the e-mail it received Monday said that if the exhibition continued, arson, theft, shootings, or terror attacks might occur at the National Museum in Prague, per CNA. More than 100 artifacts have been featured at the show titled “100 Treasures, 100 Stories: Treasures from the National Palace Museum.”
The museum in Taipei said Wednesday that after having been notified of the threat by the Mainland Affairs Council, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the museum had separately requested Taiwan’s office in Prague and the National Museum to strengthen safety measures in order to prevent incidents.
Museum Director Hsiao Tsung-huang (蕭宗煌) called an emergency meeting Wednesday to discuss upgrading physical and cyber security at its Taipei and Chiayi County branches as well. Video conferences with the Czech museum will keep Taipei updated about the latest developments.
The National Palace Museum called for respect of the universal value of culture. The museum added the show in Prague was intended to give Europeans an opportunity to learn more about Asian culture and encourage them to visit Taiwan. The exhibition will remain open until Dec. 31.
