TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council urged Beijing to quickly open tourism talks and to resume admitting Chinese students to study in Taiwan, framing both steps as practical, low-barrier moves to restore normal exchanges.
MAC said tourism negotiations should go ahead via the Taiwan Strait Tourism Association and its Chinese counterpart to keep the process clear and professional, per CNA. It also called for lifting limits on Chinese students and returning to regular academic exchanges.
Beijing’s Taiwan Affairs Office replied that its “sincerity” on tourism is unchanged and cited an existing plan for group tours from Fujian and Shanghai, while accusing Taiwan and the ruling DPP of politicizing industry associations and NGOs.
On China residency-status inquiry letters reported by some Taiwanese business groups, MAC Spokesperson Liang Wen-chieh (梁文傑) said the National Immigration Agency acts on specific reports and advised recipients to respond promptly.
