TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Huang Chun-ming (黃春明 is staying productive at 89 and his latest work published on Monday, “Shan Yeh” (山爺), looks at an elderly man who reluctantly agrees to move into a nursing home.
Set in the 1960s and ‘70s the man lives in a secluded mountain village. Though he wants to stay, he is worn down by illness and finally agrees to move into a nursing home.
“Shan Yeh” had a long gestation period, Huang told CNA. The 1998 National Award for Arts winner added that he wanted to convey the warmth and resilience of ordinary people from half a century ago.
Huang's writing prompts readers to pause and reflect on life, while also examining folk beliefs in Taiwan. He looks at how time mellows passion, how memory intensifies regret, and how the small relationships that stitch together a community reveal more about identity than ideology.
