TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The New Taipei City Transportation Department announced plans to upgrade public transportation with a shift to electric buses and the installation of 3,040 smart bus stops that provide real-time arrival data.
The plan was unveiled at a transportation forum for Taiwan’s six major municipalities on Monday. Transportation Department Commissioner Chung Ming-shih (鍾鳴時) said the city’s bus system is integral to daily life and warrants an upgrade, per China Times.
Chung said there are 366 bus routes in New Taipei, with 2,447 buses operating daily and average ridership of 780,000. Buses are vital for students and other commuters, he added.
According to Chung, New Taipei will use big data to roll out 3,040 smart bus stops with dynamic displays providing real-time arrival information with more than 90% accuracy. Some stops will also include voice announcements.

Integrating data from passengers and vehicles will create a comprehensive traffic database to optimize routes and schedules, improving dispatch and operational efficiency.
New Taipei is also introducing electric buses to replace about 1,700 diesel buses. Multiple transfer stations are being planned to improve connections among MRT, buses, YouBike, and parking facilities.
Officials said improving commute efficiency not only benefits residents but also promotes tourism, adding that better public transportation supports the transition to a low-carbon economy.
