TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) called for Taiwan’s inclusion in the UN system in a Newsmax opinion article published on Sunday.
China’s deliberate misinterpretation of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 prevents Taiwan from joining the UN, Lin said. “The resolution is falsely linked with the so-called ‘one China principle’ and continues to be wrongfully weaponized to block Taiwan’s participation.”
Lin said the resolution only addresses China’s representation and does not mention Taiwan’s sovereign status, nor does it grant Beijing the right to represent Taiwan.
As part of the first island chain, Taiwan is defending democracy and freedom from authoritarianism, Lin said. The country also “contributes significantly” to regional stability with its economy and semiconductor manufacturing, he said.
“It is time for the UN to fulfill its mission of ‘leaving no one behind’ by including Taiwan,” Lin said.
