TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — An Australian MRT rider who drank a beverage on the subway train set off a dispute that ended with a man brandishing a utility knife, police said.
Around 3:15 p.m. on the Zhonghe–Xinlu Line between Xuhui Senior High School and Sanhe Junior High stations, a 41-year-old Australian was drinking when a 41-year-old man surnamed Ke (柯) told him to stop, per Mirror News. The Australian allegedly replied with a middle finger.
Ke then pulled out a utility knife, prompting passengers to alert staff. The men were asked to get off the train at Sanchong Elementary School Station and were handed over to Sanchong Precinct officers. No one was hurt.
Police described the incident as “a simple dispute between two passengers, not a random attack.”
Taipei Rapid Transit Corp. fined the Australian NT$1,500 (US$50) under the Mass Rapid Transit Act for drinking on the train. Ke received a NT$10,000 fine for brandishing a knife and was referred on suspicion of intimidation endangering safety, authorities said, per CNA.
