TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taoyuan prosecutors on Wednesday announced the indictment of a US woman who allegedly smuggled 4.24 kg of heroin into Taiwan after being duped by an online “fiance” and a man posing as his supervisor.
The Aviation Police Bureau and Taipei Customs stopped the suspect in May after she arrived via Hong Kong with a checked suitcase that appeared tampered with, per CNA. Officers opened the luggage and found heroin inside, valued at more than NT$30 million (US$1 million).
Investigators said the woman — about 50 years old and identified in police notes as “Ms. C” — met a man online who became her fiance and asked her to send him money. A second man, described as the fiance’s “supervisor,” then arranged a trip to Laos, promising airfare, lodging, and a daily stipend in exchange for attending a “job interview” and carrying a bag to Taiwan.
After the airport arrest, police traced the intended recipient and detained a Taiwanese man surnamed Yeh (葉) in Taoyuan’s Zhongli District. The seized evidence included the suitcase and the woman’s phone.
Prosecutors said the case was filed under the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act and noted that romance scams are increasingly used to recruit drug couriers.
