TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan may be hit by two typhoons soon, Central Weather Administration forecaster Chang Chun-yao (張竣堯) said on Tuesday.
One tropical depression is currently about 840 kilometers south-southeast of Eluanbi and is moving northwest toward the Bashi Channel, Chang said. Within the next 48 hours, the tropical depression may strengthen into a typhoon as it enters the channel, CNA reported.
It is expected to come closest to Taiwan between Thursday and Friday and could result in a sea warning. However, due to its relatively small size, only southern and eastern Taiwan will bear the brunt of the storm.
Another tropical disturbance near Guam could strengthen into a tropical depression as early as Wednesday, Chang said. It has a high chance of intensifying into a typhoon as it moves westward. It is expected to approach Taiwan next Monday and Tuesday, though its exact trajectory remains uncertain, he said.
If both systems strengthen into typhoons, they would be named Mitag and Kogasa, becoming the 17th and 18th typhoons of the year, respectively.
In July, Typhoon Danas hit Taiwan, killing two and injuring hundreds.
