TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taipei District Court on Monday upheld bail for former Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) and Taipei City Councilor Ying Hsiao-wei (應曉薇) in the Core Pacific City case.
The court kept bail at NT$70 million (US$2.3 million) for Ko and NT$30 million for Ying despite prosecutors’ appeal, per CNA. Both remain under travel and residence restrictions until April next year and are barred from contacting witnesses or co-defendants.
The court also ordered Ko and Ying to wear electronic monitoring devices and carry designated phones. They are prohibited from harassing or threatening individuals linked to the case.
Prosecutors argued that witness questioning was incomplete and accused Ko of contacting two witnesses after his Sept. 8 release. They appealed the decision the next day, sending the case to the Taiwan High Court.
The High Court ruled Friday that the appeal had merit, overturning the original decision and ordering a new hearing. However, Monday’s ruling maintained the same bail terms for both.
The Taiwan People’s Party said in a statement that Ko has suffered physically and mentally during nearly a year of incommunicado detention and vowed to stand by him and his family, per UDN.
