TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan fell 9-1 to host Japan in the U-18 Baseball World Cup Super Round on Saturday, scratching across its lone run in the fifth inning.
The loss affected Taiwan’s Super Round standing and set up a consolation third-place game against South Korea on Sunday at 10 a.m. in Okinawa. The championship will feature the US against Japan at 3 p.m., per CNA.
Taiwan faced an undefeated Japanese side. Starter Chang Yi-an (張乙安) ran into trouble with one out in the first, committing an error and loading the bases before back-to-back doubles brought in two runs.
In the second, Chang continued to struggle, allowing three singles and a run on a wild pitch. He exited after yielding two runs in the inning.
Reliever He Hua (何樺) also labored, and Japan pushed its lead to 9-0 by the end of the second.
Taiwan went deeper into the bullpen and used three relievers to keep Japan off the board the rest of the way.
Taiwan broke up the shutout in the fifth. Hsu Shu-cheng (許書誠) singled, Pasula Takislinian (塔基斯利尼安) walked, and Li Kai-qi (李楷棋) beat out an infield single to load the bases before Tseng Sheng-en (曾聖恩) drew a walk to force in a run.
