TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The viral video of a young Taiwanese man destroying his passport on a Chinese social media website prompted a response by the Mainland Affairs Council on Friday.
Ying Chih-hong (應志宏) live-streamed himself cutting up his Taiwan passport with scissors on the Xiaohongshu platform Monday. In the video he shows off his newly acquired Chinese ID card and Chinese passport, while declaring “I love China.”.
On Friday, MAC Spokesperson Liang Wen-chieh (梁文傑) acknowledged the video. He said that Ying is wanted by Taitung District Prosecutors Office on suspicion of fraud and money laundering, reported LTN.
MAC has also launched an investigation into Ying. If it is determined that he has broken cross-strait laws, then his Taiwan household registration along with his passport will be canceled.
Liang said Friday that Ying has not taken any official steps to renounce his Taiwan citizenship. He also asked the Chinese government to assist Taiwanese authorities and help prosecute wanted criminals.
Ying reportedly runs an account on the Xiaohongshu platform with over 8,000 followers. He regularly makes posts praising China, communism, or posts insulting Taiwan on the channel.
Ying has reportedly been living in China since late 2021. His online account was reported to the National Immigration Agency in March, per LTN.
