TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan People’s Party Chair Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) said Thursday that party founder Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) told him the party made the right call to keep its two-year rule.
Speaking on “Shao-kang on Air,” Huang said he had a long one-on-one talk with Ko, per CNA. He said Ko affirmed support for the rule requiring at-large lawmakers to step aside after two years.
The term limit was designed to set the TPP apart by creating a rotational system, Huang said, adding that Ko crafted the clause with the challenges of small parties in mind.
Huang described Ko as resilient despite recent setbacks and said he now approaches politics with a broader perspective. “Insisting on the two-year rule at the party congress back then was the right decision,” Ko told him, according to Huang.
Ko faces trial in the Core Pacific City case alongside Taipei City Councilor Ying Hsiao-wei (應曉薇). Both were granted bail by Taipei District Court, but prosecutors appealed Tuesday, and the Taiwan High Court assigned a three-judge panel to review the case.
Huang said the timing of a ruling depends on the judges and could come “as soon as tonight, or tomorrow or the day after.” He noted the High Court did not hold hearings in two earlier appeals by prosecutors.
