TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s light frigate project has been delayed by two years, according to the defense ministry’s budget report.
The military originally expected two prototype light frigates to be completed and delivered by next October, but they will now be delivered in 2027, Liberty Times reported. The entire project, which comprises 10 additional light frigates, is postponed to 2028. However, the budget remains unchanged at NT$24.5 billion (US$807.91 million).
The two prototypes will replace Taiwan’s aging Knox-class frigates, taking on combat readiness and patrol duties in the Taiwan Strait. One will be modified for air defense, and the other will be specialized in anti-submarine operations.
The air-defense variant will use a vertical launch system carrying 32 Sea Sword II surface-to-air missiles. The anti-submarine variant will use inclined launchers for 16 Sea Sword II missiles, supplemented with anti-submarine torpedoes and a towed sonar system.
Taiwan is also planning to build a 6,000-tonne frigate prototype next year. It has allotted NT$142.03 million for the project. The vessel will perform blue-water training, escort offshore supply missions, and safeguard maritime transportation routes.
