TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan won three gold medals on the final day of the World Outdoor Tug of War Championships in Nottingham, England, on Sunday.
The women's team once again demonstrated its prowess in the 540 kg event, easily defeating Sweden in the final to secure its fourth consecutive championship, according to CNA.
Taiwan also won gold in the junior mixed 520 kg and junior women's 500 kg events, while the junior men's 600 kg team finished in fifth place. According to Taiwan's sports award system, a gold medal at the World Tug of War Championships qualifies for a cash bonus of NT$600,000 (US$19,700).
Cho Yao-peng (卓耀鵬), secretary-general of the Taiwan Tug-of-War Association, expressed pride in the hard work of all the Taiwanese athletes. He said the team overcame adversity by competing in two high-profile events in one month: the World Games and the World Championships.
"The team's gold medals in both of these world-class competitions demonstrate our exceptional strength and deserve attention even though tug of war is not included in the Asian Games or the Olympics," said Cho.
