TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The third Matsu Biennial art festival opened on Sunday.
This year’s theme is “Your Sea, My Land,” which “connects Matsu’s cultural heritage and modern life to explore topics of ecology, identity, spatial politics, and relational aesthetics,” according to its website. The biennial seeks to revitalize the islands and their maritime culture, per CNA.
The Matsu National Scenic Area Headquarters said the festival integrates art into tunnels, military outposts, villages, harbors, and natural landscapes, allowing visitors to experience both artistic creations and the islands’ history and daily life.
Tourism Administration Director-General Chen Yu-hsiu (陳玉秀) said Matsu’s geological landscapes are already distinctive. Through local and international artwork, the festival reinterprets the stories of Matsu’s land, she said.
Chen added that such festivals are better suited to attracting international visitors, particularly from the high-end tourism market, than domestic tourists.
