TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taipei officials cautioned residents against going into the mountains Sunday afternoon, even though the expected Tropical Storm Tapah is unlikely to impact Taiwan directly.
Tropical Depression TD19 was located south-southeast of the Dongsha Islands, 580 kilometers southwest of Eluanbi at Taiwan’s southern tip at 2 a.m. Saturday, the Central Weather Administration said. The depression is likely to turn into Tropical Storm Tapah during the day.
While the storm will likely stay away from Taiwan and make landfall in southern China Monday morning, Taipei City Government said there was a high likelihood of short but heavy rainfall Sunday afternoon, per CNA. The city advised people against hiking into the mountains or seeking out beaches and seaside areas to avoid dangerous conditions.
Before Sunday, residents of the capital’s Neihu District should take care as temperatures could reach 38 C, the city said. The Central Weather Administration warned of similar situations in parts of New Taipei, Taoyuan, and Tainan.
Strong winds are possible in coastal areas of New Taipei, Yilan, and Pingtung until Sunday morning.
