TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Former Taipei Mayor and Taiwan People’s Party Chair Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) and Taipei City Councilor Ying Hsiao-wei (應曉薇) on Thursday requested a suspension of their detention but were told by Taipei District Court that a ruling would be made at its discretion.
Ko was reportedly emotional and cried, while Ying described finding cockroaches in his cell, per CNA.
The two were detained over allegations of corruption and illicit political donations linked to the redevelopment of the Core Pacific City department store. Their current detention period is set to expire on Oct. 1.
The court said it would consider early release depending on whether the defendants were flight risks, likely to collude with witnesses, or could tamper with evidence. It added that a decision would be made when appropriate.
In July, the court extended the pair’s detention by two months and prohibited them from receiving visitors or communicating with others.
Prosecutors are seeking more than 28 years in prison for Ko and more than 16 years for Ying, in addition to fines and penalties. Their detention has already been extended multiple times.
