TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The New Taipei City Government on Thursday launched a pilot program using embedded pavement lights at a crosswalk outside Exit 1 of MRT Fuzhong Station.
The LED lights flash in sync with pedestrian traffic signals, giving both pedestrians and drivers clearer awareness of changing lights. They operate day and night, in all weather conditions, to remind pedestrians whether the signal is green or red.
Transportation Department Director-General Chung Ming-shi (鍾鳴時) said the system expands pedestrians’ field of vision and instantly alerts them to signal changes. It also provides drivers with an additional reminder during nighttime or rainy conditions.
The MRT Fuzhong Station was chosen for the pilot due to heavy weekday and holiday crowds, the department said. The light housings feature anti-slip surfaces and have passed heavy-duty testing.
Officials added that monitoring and evaluation of the system will help build a more comprehensive pedestrian safety network. They reminded the public to obey traffic signals, avoid running red lights, and not look down at their phones while crossing.
