TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan will expand its low birth rate countermeasures next year with a new plan adding more than NT$30 billion (US$970 million) to labor-related childbirth benefits.
The Ministry of Labor’s budget documents show an allocation of over NT$70 billion for parental leave and childbirth benefits, per CNA. This marks an increase from the previous budget of NT$38 billion, which covered only parental leave allowances. Childbirth benefits are a new category.
The government’s new pro-natal plan, which has yet to be detailed, will involve eight ministries and agencies. Departments will focus on four areas: comprehensive child care, family-friendly workplaces, children’s health rights and protection, and support for childbirth.
Under the Labor Insurance Act, insured women are entitled to two months of salary after giving birth. Last year, the government received 105,943 claims, paying out NT$7.5 billion.
