TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Commenting on Beijing's “Victory Day” parade on Wednesday, DPP China Affairs Department Director Wu Jun-zhi (吳峻鋕) described it as “warmongering."
Wu said that 80 years have passed since the end of World War II, which taught humanity to “oppose aggression and pursue peace," per CNA. However, he said, Russia and China are exhibiting an “extreme belligerence” that threatens world peace.
National security officials on Monday warned that former KMT Chair Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) and other KMT members’ attendance at the military parade would send the wrong message to both Beijing and the international community.
Wu said that Hung went to Tiananmen to publicly endorse the parade. He said this mirrors former Vice President Lien Chan’s (連戰) visit 10 years ago and is a measure of the CCP’s united front strategy.
Wu pointed out that in May, when Chinese leader Xi Jinping (習近平) attended Russia’s Red Square Victory Day Parade, he referenced three anniversaries: the 80th anniversary of the victory over Japan, the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, and 80 years since Taiwan’s retrocession.
Wu said that 80 years later former aggressors, including Japan and Germany, are now important partners in maintaining world peace.
“Certain individuals should not continue to use 80-year-old grievances and anti-Japanese sentiment to sow conflict between people and nations,” Wu said.
