Taipei (Taiwan News) — The Taipei City Department of Cultural Affairs said Tuesday (Sept. 2) that Loh Li-chen (駱麗真) — current director of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) — has been appointed as the 10th director of the Taipei Fine Arts Museum.
Loh's appointment follows the departure of former TFAM Director Wang Jun-jieh (王俊傑), who returned to his position at Taipei National University of the Arts. Liu Te-chien (劉得堅), deputy director of the Taipei City Department of Cultural Affairs, has been serving as acting director since then.
Loh holds a master's degree in fine arts from New York University and a Ph.D. from National Chiao Tung University’s Institute of Applied Arts. Her expertise includes contemporary art curating and criticism, museum administration, new media art research, and art education.
She is also a co-founder of the Taiwan Contemporary Art Database.
From 2018-2019, Loh served as CEO of the Digital Art Center, Taipei, where she was instrumental in promoting digital art and cross-disciplinary exhibitions and fostering international visibility for Taiwan's digital art scene.
Since she was appointed director of MOCA Taipei in 2019, Loh has been a strong advocate for young Taiwanese artists, with a particular focus on the digital and conceptual performance art fields. She has also worked to enhance the museum's public services, expanding its audience and deepening the dialogue between contemporary art and social issues.
In a statement regarding her new role, Loh said that her vision is to leverage Taipei as a cultural brand. She aims to integrate TFAM with its planned expansion to feature more contemporary and new media art, creating collaborations with international exhibitions.
Loh noted that the strategy seeks to differentiate Taipei's cultural landscape from other cities and strengthen its influence on the global cultural map.
