TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taoyuan City’s YouBike is expected to reach 100 million cumulative rides in mid-September, with officials announcing a special promotion to mark the milestone on Tuesday.
As of Aug. 15, ridership stood at 99.2 million. The new campaign offers prizes, including an Apple Watch for the 100 millionth rider, NT$1,000 (US$33) gift certificates for the next two riders, and commemorative EasyCards.
Taoyuan Department of Transportation Director-General Chang Hsin-fu (張新福) said the city currently has 616 YouBike stations and 12,091 bikes, including 1,633 electric models.
A promotion launched at the end of August, “I am a prophet,” encouraged riders to predict when the milestone would be reached. It spurred over 1.41 million rides in August, a 15% increase from last year, helping the city approach the goal ahead of schedule.
Chang said Taoyuan achieved its goal of setting up stations in all municipal districts with the launch of facilities in Fuxing District in June. He added that the city is committed to boosting station density and improving dispatch efficiency to make Taoyuan more bicycle-friendly and sustainable.
